"Superficial Lovin'"
feat Lassou
I met Elyanah while she was working at Sugar Bar in Harlem and I was playing a guitar gig. She's a silly, creative person and her voice reminded me of some hybrid of Amy Winehouse & Erykah Badu. We linked up to create music and this song was born.
She started off the session with some arpeggiated keys and I built music around it. She made the first words "Superficial lovin', like the way I want it.". Immediately I wanted to talk about the moments when you don't want to be caught in your thoughts about the future or past, but to feel in the moment with someone. But we can only live in the present for so long, because of the how our energies transfer and tangle and confuse. And some parts of the human experience require intention. Even sometimes we build things we didn't intend, but it can set us on the path we were always meant to be on..
